This is Steve Benton with Tales from the Tour. Kent Chase was playing in the Singapore Open with Payne Stewart and needed a “par” on the 36th hole to make the cut. Unfortunately, he hit his tee shot left into the trees. And his Caddie, who didn’t speak English, threw him a provisional ball and took off towards the trees.
Unfortunately, when the Players reached the area they were surprised to see Kent’s ball 300 plus yards from the tee box and in the middle of the fairway.
Kent looked at Payne and said “somethings not right, what should I do?” Payne said “I think you have to play the ball where it lies”. Kent said “I don’t feel right about this.” And Payne said, “I don’t think you have a choice”. Feeling somewhat guilty, Kent played the ball and made the “cut” on the nose. Now a Caddy makes a nominal fee for carrying a player’s bag but the real money comes when a Player makes the “cut”. And that’s why this tale is called “you’re going to make the cut”.
